Safeguarding at St. Joseph's

At St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, we regard the safeguarding of children as our main priority. We believe that we all have the right to be happy, to be safe and to learn. We all have the responsibility to make this happen.

We will ensure that:

  • the welfare of the child remains paramount;
  • all children whatever their age, culture, disability, gender, language, racial origin, religious beliefs and/ or sexual identity have the right to be protected from harm;
  • all suspicions and allegations of abuse will be taken seriously and responded to swiftly and appropriately;
  • all staff and volunteers working at our school have a responsibility to report concerns to the designated leads for Safeguarding: Mrs Gibson-Crone (Headteacher), Miss Dove (Deputy Headteacher), Miss Harrison (PSA),

Prevent

As part of our safeguarding responsibilities, [School Name] is fully committed to the Prevent Duty, which is a government strategy aimed at preventing children and young people from being drawn into extremism or radicalisation.

We actively promote British values — including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs — through our curriculum, assemblies, and wider school culture.

Staff are trained to identify signs of radicalisation and know how to report concerns. We work closely with external agencies, including the Local Authority and police, to ensure pupils are safe and supported.

Our approach is rooted in education, dialogue, and inclusion, helping pupils to develop critical thinking skills, resilience, and a strong sense of belonging.

If you have any concerns relating to Prevent or safeguarding, please contact our Designated Safeguarding Lead.

Online Safety

We are committed to ensuring all pupils learn how to stay safe online, in line with the latest Department for Education guidance. Online safety is embedded across our curriculum, including Computing, PSHE, and Relationships Education, and is supported by robust safeguarding policies. Pupils are taught to recognise risks, behave responsibly, and know where to seek help. Our approach reflects the DfE’s emphasis on making online safety a consistent theme throughout school life, supported by appropriate filtering and monitoring systems to protect children from harmful content and interactions

Medical and Health

If your child has a medical or health condition such as asthma, allergies, epilepsy, diabetes, or any other ongoing concern, it is very important that you inform the school as soon as possible. This ensures we can provide the right support and respond appropriately in an emergency. Miss Harrison, our designated staff member for medical needs, will arrange for a Health Care Plan to be completed in collaboration with you and, where necessary, your child’s healthcare professionals. This plan outlines key information such as symptoms to look out for, medication details, and steps to take in case of an emergency. Once completed, the Health Care Plan will be shared with relevant staff members so they are fully informed and prepared to support your child throughout the school day. Your cooperation helps us maintain a safe and supportive environment for all pupils.

First Aiders

First aiders play a vital role in keeping our school community safe and supported. They are trained to respond quickly in emergencies, providing essential care for injuries or illnesses. Our staff are Paediatric First Aiders or Emergency First Aiders. Their presence helps create a safe, caring, and responsive environment for everyone in our school.
