Intent

Implementation

At St Joseph’s, teachers model a positive attitude and determination in PE, fostering a love of physical activity and helping pupils to flourish. High expectations are set for all, with appropriate challenge for more able pupils and those with particular athletic talents.

Key Stage 1 focuses on:

  • Mastering basic movements including running, jumping, throwing, and catching, while developing balance, agility, and coordination.
  • Applying these skills in a range of activities and team games, learning simple tactics for attacking and defending.
  • Performing dances using simple movement patterns.

Key Stage 2 builds on this foundation, with pupils taught to:

  • Use running, jumping, throwing, and catching both individually and in combination.
  • Play competitive games (modified where appropriate), applying principles of attack and defence across sports such as badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders, and tennis.
  • Develop flexibility, strength, technique, control, and balance through athletics and gymnastics.
  • Perform dances with a wider range of movement patterns.
  • Take part in outdoor and adventurous challenges, both individually and in teams.
  • Compare performances to previous ones and demonstrate improvement, aiming for personal bests.

Lessons are carefully scaffolded using Get Set 4 PE and our own curriculum plans, ensuring all lessons are inclusive for all.

Lessons are taught both by class teachers and also external coaches.

Children build on prior learning each year, gradually increasing their competence, confidence, and sense of achievement.

Education Enterprise

At St Joseph’s, we are proud to work with Education Enterprise, which enhances our PE curriculum and provides a wide range of sporting opportunities that are fully accessible and inclusive. Through this partnership, pupils take part in festivals, competitions, and multi-sport events, allowing them to develop their sporting skills, teamwork, resilience, and a love of physical activity.

Impact

As a result of our PE curriculum, pupils will:

  • Develop physical skills and fitness, including balance, coordination, strength, agility, and flexibility, progressively building on prior learning.
  • Participate confidently in individual, team, and competitive activities, understanding rules, tactics, and the value of fair play.
  • Build resilience, determination, and a positive attitude, learning to cope with winning and losing and to strive for personal bests.
  • Enjoy a lifelong love of physical activity, understanding its benefits for health, wellbeing, and teamwork, and gaining confidence to take part in a wide range of sports and challenges.

PE Careers at St. Joseph's

At St Joseph’s, our PE curriculum helps children to see the opportunities that physical activity and sport can bring. Pupils explore how the skills they develop - teamwork, resilience, problem-solving, and leadership - can lead to a wide range of careers, from coaching, sports science and physiotherapy to teaching and professional athletics. Through competition, performance, and participation, children gain confidence, ambition, and the understanding that dreaming big and identifying their talents can open doors to exciting opportunities in sport and beyond.
