At St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, we are committed to providing opportunities that broaden our pupils’ horizons and inspire them to dream big. Recently, a group of our pupils returned from an unforgettable international visit to Estepona, Spain, as part of the government-funded Turing Scheme.

This extraordinary experience gave our children the chance to explore a new country, immerse themselves in a different culture, and develop confidence, independence and a greater sense of global awareness.

A Memorable Journey

The adventure began with an early start as pupils travelled to Leeds Bradford Airport before flying to Málaga. For many, this was their first time travelling abroad, making the journey even more exciting and significant.

From the moment they arrived on the Costa del Sol, pupils embraced every opportunity to learn, explore and create lasting memories.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

A key highlight of the visit was the partnership with Queen’s British Grammar School in Estepona. Pupils were given a warm welcome and fully immersed in school life, joining lessons alongside their Spanish and international peers.

This unique experience enabled pupils to:

  • Build friendships with pen pals
  • Share learning across cultures
  • Develop communication skills and confidence

It provided valuable insight into a different education system and helped pupils grow in both independence and understanding.

Exploring Culture and Heritage

Beyond the classroom, pupils experienced a rich programme that brought Spanish culture to life. Activities included:

  • A guided visit to Estepona’s bullring museum
  • Sampling traditional Spanish cuisine, including paella
  • Practising language skills in real-life settings

These experiences deepened pupils’ cultural awareness and encouraged them to appreciate life beyond their own community.

Memorable Experiences

The trip included a range of exciting visits and activities, including:

  • Estepona Town Hall, where pupils met the Mayor and learned about the local community
  • Selwo Aventura Wildlife Park, exploring conservation and the natural world
  • Time on the beautiful Spanish coastline, enjoying the environment and reflecting on their experience

A Cultural Visit to Málaga

On their final day, pupils visited the vibrant city of Málaga. Highlights included exploring the historic cathedral and experiencing the city’s rich culture and atmosphere—an ideal way to conclude a memorable week.

Building Skills for the Future

The visit supported pupils in developing key life skills, including:

  • Confidence and resilience
  • Independence
  • Communication and collaboration
  • A broader global perspective

Experiences such as this help ensure our pupils are well-prepared for the next stages of their education and beyond.

A Lasting Impact

Reflecting on the success of the visit, Headteacher Alice Gibson-Crone said:

“We were absolutely thrilled to provide our children with this life-changing opportunity. For many, it was their first time travelling abroad, which made it even more special. It was incredible to see friendships come to life and to watch our pupils fully immerse themselves in a new culture. The impact has been significant, helping to develop their confidence, resilience, independence and global awareness.”

Our Thanks

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Queen’s British Grammar School in Estepona for their warm hospitality and support, which played a vital role in making the visit such a success.

At St Joseph’s, we are incredibly proud of how our pupils represented the school throughout this experience. Opportunities like this allow our children to step beyond their local community, discover the wider world and realise their full potential.
