As part of our railway bicentenary celebrations, St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Coundon was thrilled to welcome Darrin, the lead locomotive engineer for the iconic Sir Nigel Gresley steam locomotive.

Darrin shared fascinating insights into his career journey, explaining what it takes to restore and maintain historic steam engines. Our pupils were captivated, asking thoughtful questions such as:

  • “What route did you have to take to become an engineer?”
  • “What qualities would I need to do this job?”

This special visit gave our children a unique opportunity to learn about engineering careers, the importance of heritage railways, and the skills needed to work in this exciting field.

We are grateful to Darrin for inspiring the next generation and helping us celebrate 200 years of railway history in such a memorable way!
