Pupils at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School were given a glimpse into their future aspirations this week as representatives from Durham University spent the afternoon working with Year 5 and Year 6.

The visiting team introduced pupils to the world of higher education, explaining what a university is, the variety of subjects that can be studied, and the different pathways young people can take to reach their dream careers. Through engaging discussions and activities, the session aimed to broaden pupils’ horizons and encourage them to start thinking about their long-term goals.

Teachers reported that the children were enthusiastic and full of questions, eager to explore possibilities ranging from science and engineering to the arts and humanities. The workshop not only highlighted the academic opportunities available but also reinforced the message that university is an achievable option for all pupils with ambition and determination.

By the end of the afternoon, inspiration was running high in the classroom. Many pupils expressed a newfound desire to pursue university study in the future, with several already beginning to imagine the careers they might one day have.

Staff at St Joseph’s described the visit as a valuable and motivating experience, helping pupils understand the importance of perseverance, curiosity, and confidence as they take their next steps through school and beyond.
