Year 3 and Year 4 pupils at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Coundon enjoyed an inspiring and educational workshop this week as part of their Science topic, Sound and the Ear. Lauren, our Teacher of the Deaf, visited the school to deliver a hands-on session that deepened the children’s understanding of how hearing works—and how hearing loss can affect everyday life.

During the workshop, Lauren explained how each part of the ear functions, helping pupils link their classroom learning to real‑life experiences. She also introduced the children to a range of specialist equipment, including hearing aids and bone anchored hearing aids, demonstrating how these devices can support individuals with hearing impairments. Pupils even had the chance to try on some of the equipment, giving them an invaluable insight into what it feels like to experience hearing challenges.

A highlight of the workshop was learning some basic sign language, enabling the children to explore new ways to communicate and to further appreciate the importance of inclusivity and accessibility.

A very special mention goes to Lacey and Heidi, who worked alongside Lauren and played a key role in the session. The pair spent their own time creating a thoughtful and informative PowerPoint presentation for their classmates, sharing their personal journeys with hearing loss. They explained how their friends can support them during the school day and helped everyone understand what inclusion truly looks like in practice.

Their courage, dedication and leadership greatly enriched the workshop—and reflected the caring, supportive ethos that makes St Joseph’s so proud.

At St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, we celebrate an inclusive culture where every child is valued, understood and empowered to share their unique experiences. This workshop was a wonderful example of our community coming together to learn, grow and support one another.
