The Early Years team at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Coundon enjoyed a magical outdoor learning experience last week as Nursery and Reception pupils headed to Hamsterley Forest for a day of adventure, exploration and storytelling.

The visit formed part of the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, supporting children’s physical development, communication skills and love of reading. Excitement filled the air as the children set off on a special mission: to hunt for the Gruffalo!

During their journey through the forest trails, the pupils used their observation skills to search for clues, explore natural habitats and bring the popular Julia Donaldson story to life. After much anticipation—and lots of teamwork—the children finally discovered the Gruffalo himself, much to their delight.

Throughout the day, the children engaged in activities that encouraged them to develop their gross motor skills, such as climbing, balancing, and navigating natural obstacles. Opportunities for speaking and listening were woven into every part of the visit, helping to boost confidence and communication in a fun and meaningful way.

The EYFS staff said the visit was “a fantastic day that celebrated learning through play and the wonder of the outdoors.” The children returned to school buzzing with excitement and full of stories to share with their families.

This memorable trip to Hamsterley Forest highlights the school’s commitment to providing enriching experiences that nurture curiosity, imagination and a lifelong love of nature.
